This page is just to let you know about the small number of third party services I use to make everything work, plus a few key details about
For all users/visitors
The backend, UI and database for this site are all hosted via a company called Digital Ocean
The only personal data stored here is your email address to enable the site to work correctly (and handle important details such as whether you're a Practical ASP.NET Pro member and/or what courses you have access to).
I use Plausible Analytics to access useful stats about how many people are visiting the site, which pages are most popular etc.
Unlike other analytics software, all site measurement data is completely, and totally anonymous. No cookies are set, nor are any personal details collected.
Plausible is built and hosted in the EU, where all aggregated site data is kept fully secured, encrypted and hosted on renewable energy powered servers (in Germany).
As you might be able to tell, I'm a big fan of Plausible, mostly because of their privacy focus and commitment to never track, collect or store any personal or personally identifiable information.
You can read more about Plausible's approach here
I use Auth0 to handle all authentication/authorisation requirements. If you choose to register an account for this site (https://practicaldotnet.io), Auth0 will store the relevant details to enable you to log in. Data stored here includes your email address if you register with your email and a password, or alternatively a link to your social account(s) if you choose to log in that way.
When you log in a cookie is stored in your browser to control which parts of the site you are able to access.
I send some key transactional emails using Mailgun. The email server used with Mailgun is hosted in the EU.
For newsletter subscribers
I use Bento as my email service provider. Data stored with them includes your email address, and (if you provide it) your name. All emails from myself (via Bento) include a link to unsubscribe.
For customers (who purchase courses/ebooks)
Your email address will be added to Bento who I use as my primary email service provider. Data stored with them includes your email address, and (if you provide it) your name. All emails from myself (via Bento) include a link to unsubscribe.
I use Auth0 to handle all authentication/authorisation requirements. If you purchase a course a site profile/account will be created automatically. You will then be asked to create a password (enabling you to log in to the site to access your content). Auth0 will store the relevant details to enable you to log in. Data stored here includes your email address if you register with your email and a password, or alternatively a link to your social account(s) if you choose to log in that way.
When you log in a cookie is stored in your browser to control which parts of the site you are able to access, and to ensure you are able to see details which relate to your purchases.
I use PayHip to handle payment processing. PayHip in turn connect to Stripe or PayPal (depending on the payment method you choose). PayHip capture the email address you enter as part of the payment process, and your ip address/approximate location.
If you choose to pay by entering your card details, Stripe will ultimately handle that transaction. Data stored in Stripe includes your email address.
If you choose to pay via your PayPal account then no extra/additional personally identifiable details will be captured/stored.
For Practical ASP.NET Pro members
When you become a member, your email will be added to Bento for the purposes of sending you emails about the community. Data stored includes your email address, and (if you provide it) your name. All emails from myself (via Bento) include at least one link to unsubscribe.
When you choose to become a Practical ASP.NET Pro member I will send you an invite via Circle.so who host the community. Personal data collected/held here includes your email address and name (if you choose to share it).
I use Stripe for collecting payment when you subscribe to Practical ASP.NET Pro. Data stored in Stripe includes your email address, and payment details.
Your subscription will automatically renew and you will get reminder emails in advance of the renewal (at which point you can easily cancel should you wish to do so).
You can view or manage your subscription (to change payment details, cancel or make other adjustments) via the link in the community, or the link/button included in the reminder emails which you will receive when your subscription is about to renew.
You can cancel at any time during your membership period.
If you do so within the first 14 days of your membership then I will issue you a full refund.
After the first 14 days, you can cancel and will retain access to the community until the date your membership expires.
